De-Cluttering Challenge!!

I don't usually make New Year's resolutions, and I'm not going to start, but I did make a list of goals to work on this year. Some people/relationship oriented, and some practical.
Practical, I want to reduce the amount of "stuff" we have, not buy more stuff, and therefore, save money!
Thus, the de-clutter challenge! I am challenging myself to see how much stuff I can get rid of in 2011. I've already started, but I know there's so much more I can do. Weldon cleaned out his office last week, and we did the girl's room earlier this week. Here are the totals:

Office:
30 to give away
34 to recycle
300!! trash (This was mostly paper, but still clutter!)
10 to try to sell

Girl's room:
37 to give away
41 trash
and a couple of boxes of toys went in the attic for later

Grand Total:
452 things out of the house!!

So, the rules of the challenge! Start de-cluttering, and post every Friday what you have gotten rid of. Either count every item, or give a rough estimate of how many things you have gotten out of your house. I will tally up the numbers at the end of the month, and announce a winner! I'm trying to figure out a prize that won't bring more clutter to the winner! Any ideas? I'll continue the challenge as long as there is interest!

Coming next week:
No-Spend Challenge begins
An itemized grocery total for my shopping once-a-month (while avoiding Wal-Mart)
Maybe a recipe or two

The Challenge Begins--At Least For Me!

Like I mentioned earlier in the week, I've started de-cluttering around the house. I'm going to continue working on this as long as I need to. With the end of the year coming up, though, I know all of us will be busy! I'm sure my de-cluttering will be limited. However, I'm going to do what I can.
I will post every Friday what I have gotten rid of that week. Feel free to do the same, and I'll tally up everyone's totals for the month, and announce a winner! I won't start the challenge until January, so feel free to add in anything that's de-cluttered between now and then.
I've put a button on the sidebar for you to take, and I may do this as a Linky party, if I can figure it out. If not, just post your totals in the "comments" section.

Let me know if you have any questions! And, I am including trash in the challenge; that's clutter, too!

So, for me this week, I worked on the master bedroom, front hall closet, and just picked up a couple things here and there.
I found:
42 items to go to Goodwill
50 things to throw away
and 2 things to try to sell
5 items to give back to people
Total: 99 items

And, of course, lots of things that went back into their rightful place!!

A New Way Of Shopping--For Me, At Least

One of the side effects of eating gluten-free, sugar-free is that it has me shopping at higher-end stores, like Whole Foods. Now, don't get me wrong, I really enjoy shopping there. The atmosphere is nice, the employees know their store and their products, and they carry quality items. However, if I were to do all my shopping there, I would spend quite a bit more than I have budgeted.
So, when we first started eating this way I would go to Whole Foods for the gluten-free stuff, Kroger for sale items, and Wal-Mart for everything else. Occasionally, another store would have something else on sale that I would stop for. And keep in mind that most of the time I had a three year old, and a 6-9 month old with me. That's a long day of grocery shopping! And I would do this once a week, or once every week and a half.
After a while of this, I started re-evaluating my priorities, and came up with this plan. A main factor was the time involved in this, another factor was the service I was getting. I hate to be this way, but the service I was getting at Whole Foods/Kroger/Martin's was superior to the service I was getting at Wal-Mart. So, I tried to figure out if I could stay within my budget and NOT shop at Wal-Mart. It's funny how your mindset can change. When we first got married, I only shopped at Wal-Mart, with an occasional stop at Kroger or Albertson's for sale items. Now I feel that my time is better spent elsewhere, as long as I'm not spending more money.

I mentioned a plan at the beginning of the last paragraph. Now I'll tell you what it is! Two of the main things that I feel are way more expensive at higher end stores are paper goods and toiletries. So I sat down one evening and did my best to figure out how much I spent on these things. Then I started doing some research online. I found that most paper goods can be bought on Amazon.com for just about the same cost, if not a little less, particularly if you're not brand-loyal.
If you are a care-giver, you can sign up with the Amazon Mom program, and get free 2-day shipping on most items. You also get discounts emailed to you. If you sign up with Subscribe & Save, you can get certain things shipped to you every 1, 2, 3 or 6 months. This gives you a 15% discount, and 30% on diapers and wipes. There is always free shipping, and free return shipping, too.
So I buy diapers and wipes either on Amazon or Diapers.com. Paper goods come from Amazon, some of these on their Subscribe & Save plan. I plan to buy razor blades on eBay.
We don't go through toiletries too fast, and I buy my shampoo at Whole Foods already, so I'm not buying those online as of yet.
I have not priced out saran wrap, ziplocs, foil or waxed paper. And there are a few things that I get a Costco, like olive oil, that I need to price online. If I can find comparable prices, we will cancel our Costco membership, and save that $40 a year.
In summary, I shop at Whole Foods and Kroger/Martin's regularly, with the occasional stop at Trader Joe's or World Market (for coffee). Paper goods get dropped on my door step.

I have also re-instituted my once-a-month grocery shopping. This alone saves time and money. I did this right after Gracie was born, but slowly fell back into once a week or so. Now I spend a day shopping, or two half-days, and then a quick trip or two back to the store for milk, eggs, or produce.

I would like to figure out exactly what I'm spending a month with buying paper goods in bulk. That is something I plan on doing in the next week. Let me know if you're interested in a sample month's grocery break-down. I'm interested to see exactly how it's going to work out!

I'll be back tomorrow with a de-cluttering update and more on the challenge!!

Decluttering--and a question!

So, my husband and I have both been bit by the de-clutter bug. And we've been bit BAD. On the surface, our house looks pretty good. Our clutter is hidden, in closets, in decorative boxes, etc. Our desire is to only have what we NEED, nothing more. We have fallen prey to the affluent, American life, like many others, and buy stuff without getting rid of something else.
So, in short, we just feel like we have too much stuff, and our life would be a lot more simple if we had less stuff.
The challenge to myself is to go through the entire house (with the help of my husband), and get rid of trash, other people's stuff, and things that we don't use anymore. I'm going to do this at least through the end of January, maybe longer.
Along with that goes the challenge to not buy anything else, except food, of course, and any other thing that we need to live on. Perishable stuff, not stuff that takes up space forever. I'm going to try to do this as long as I can.

My question to you is this: are you interested in a de-clutter challenge or a no-spend challenge? It would be a weekly or monthly challenge, rewarded by something, I'm not sure what!! Let me know, and I'll come up with a good challenge!!

Fulfilled--This Is My Calling

My ministry is in this home
I'm keeper here; I need not roam.
My hands are busy washing pots.
I'm ironing clothes and scrubbing spots.

My service to the ones I love
Flows from the heart of God above.
Through me, His vessel in this house,
He loves my kids, He loves my spouse.

My love is glue that holds us tight.
The nest's secure both day and night.
I'm always here to dry a tear.
To rub a back or calm a fear.

My "house band" makes an iron band
Around our hearts, our house, our land.
Secure, surrounded with His care.
We frolic in the love we share.

And in this circle I'm the heart.
I pump the blood to every part.
God's love flows out from me to each.
Then rebounds back from every reach.

Let others go their dreams to build.
My place is here; I am fulfilled.
I'm loved and praised; my heart is set.
By giving, all my needs are met.
